Well, this book is best described as a kind of picture book, since it has a lot of pictures but much less text (but what texts can be written about species that have become extinct hundreds or thousands of years ago)?  

Anyway, the book deals with all of the named species known to have ever existed on the Hawaiian Islands.  

And it is a very sad book! So much has been lost on these islands, over 70 species of birds are covered, all of them with illustrations made by Julian O. Hume, Frederick Frohawk and John Keulemanns.
